If Your Child is Absent
What number do I call if my child is absent?
Please call our attendance hotline, 623-435-6201
(623-435-6233 para espanol) 24 hours a day.
When do I call if my child is absent?
A parent/guardian must call the day of absence. If no call is received, Glendale High School calls home that evening using the auto dialer to your home number. After 24 hours without parental contact, the absence will be considered truancy and discipline will be assigned.
What happens if there is no call to excuse the absence by 2 p.m.?
The absence becomes unexcused or marked as truancy. If a student is truant for a class, a 3-hour detention is assigned on Tuesday or Wednesday.
How many excused absences can a student have?
A student can accumulate twelve excused absences and/or tardies per semester.

If Your Child is Late or Tardy
What happens if my child is late for first period?
School begins at 8:00 a.m.
- If your child arrives after 8:00 a.m., they must report to the Attendance Office. They will be marked tardy, then sent to class with a pass. The only acceptable excuses for tardies are medical, legal, or dental, and documentation must be provided. Parent phone calls will not excuse the tardy.
- Under the SWEEP program, students out on campus without a pass after the tardy bell will be "swept" to the Attendance Office. Tardies will be recorded, and consequences may apply.
- If your child arrives after 8:30 a.m. they must report to the Attendance Office. They will be marked absent if they miss half of the class. They will be sent to class with a pass.
- GHS does not excuse late arrivals. In the case of a late school bus, students will be given a pass to class without penalty.
How does the tardy policy work for classes other than first hour?
- Students have five minutes to get to class. If they are late, they must report to the Attendance Office. The tardy will be recorded and the student will receive a pass to class. Students out on campus after the late bell will be "swept" to the Attendance Office.
- If students report to the Attendance Office or are "swept" 30 minutes after the tardy bell and do not have a pass, they will be marked truant. Truancy consequences then apply.
