It’s summer, a time for kids to relax, visit friends, enjoy the great outdoors, and dive into an exciting new book. Research shows that reading is the key enabler of successful learning across all subject areas and grades; in other words, students that read regularly increase their level of success in school and out of school. Furthermore, reading skills deteriorate over the summer months if students do not actively work to maintain their skills. For these reasons, Glendale High School is excited to institute a new summer reading program for all students.
This summer, all students have been asked to read a book and complete a brief activity that will help them build their skills as readers as well as reinforce their current skills. This assignment is optional, but students that complete the assignment will receive extra-credit from their new English teacher when the new school year begins. (ALL English teachers are honoring this assignment, though point values may vary depending on the teacher and their grading system)
Be aware that all of the book options can be easily be checked out from the local library or purchased from a used or new bookstore. (Bookman’s Used Bookstore on 19th Avenue and Northern usually has most of these books for $8.00 or less. Barnes and Noble by Metro center and Borders on Bell and 73rd Ave usually have the books ranging from $7.00-18.00 depending on the book chosen.)
Or... purchase from Amazon and have it delivered directly to your home.
Thank you for supporting summer reading.
